Who Is a Hair Transplant Surgeon, Who Is Not?

Who Is a Hair Transplant Surgeon, Who Is Not?

The answer to this question can be different from depending on which angle we look at. If we look at from a practical point of view any medical doctor that determine themselves as a hair restoration surgeon are a hair restoration surgeon. Since there are no training bodies at medical school that teaches how to do hair surgery and gives a certificate, any doctor that have self-trained or trained, they can call themselves hair surgeons.

From a scientific point of view, obviously it requires training in dermatosurgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery. From a scientific point of view – in my opinion – it should be surgeons that have this type of training background.

If you look at laws, laws are different from location to location in the world. In Turkey where I practice; plastic surgeons, dermatologists and general practitioners that were given a certificate after a 2-3 day course a couple of years ago were given this right of practicing hair restoration surgery. This last group is still controversial and it's not possible to get this certificate anymore. Also dermatologists in Turkey do not train dermatosurgery. So, dermatologists in Turkey do not practice any surgery, although they were given this right it's debatable whether they did get actually enough training in their residency.

Being a hair transplant surgeon requires understanding the nature of hair loss, the progressiveness of hair loss in most cases, it requires being scientifically updated about current treatments and surgical techniques and the skills to do these treatments.

Lastly, I'd like to talk about who isn't a hair transplant surgeon. A medical device is not a hair transplant surgeon or a robot is not a hair transplant surgeon either, a nurse or a technician isn't a hair transplant surgeon, an ambulance paramedic or an ambulance driver isn't hair transplant surgeon. A housewife can't be a hair transplant surgeon.

Why am I giving these last examples is that some medical devices and robots are marketed in such a way as if they are the surgeon, but that's not the case, you need a trained and experienced hair transplant surgeon to operate these devices. The second thing is that technicians from various backgrounds sometimes are taken as or behave as hair transplant surgeons where they aren't. In Turkey there are people like ambulance drivers who perform hair restoration surgery. There are ambulance drivers that own hospitals, there are housewives that have no training at all that practice hair surgery and own clinics, they have even doctors working for them. So, I believe it's important to also understand who aren't hair transplant surgeons.

I hope I've been able to give a general insight into who is and who isn't a hair transplant surgeon.
